Upanayana Muhurat Calculator | Sacred Thread Dates

The Upanayana Muhurat Calculator proposes auspicious windows for the upanayana (sacred thread) ceremony: favourable nakshatras (e.g., Pushya, Chitra, Swati, Shravana, Dhanishta, Revati, Hasta, Mrigashira), non-Rikta tithis, weekday lords and sunrise-bounded muhurat spans at your coordinates, noting seasonal conventions like Uttarayana preference.

Quick reference

Favourable: Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Shravana, Dhanishta, Revati nakshatras; tithis 2,3,5,7,10,11,13; avoid Rikta (4,9,14) and Amavasya.

public Location matters

Tithi and nakshatra boundaries depend on where you are — enter your city's coordinates for precise results.

schedule Ayanamsa

Calculations use the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard for Vedic charts.

menu_book Panchang basis

Results follow drik-panchang style astronomical computation, not printed-table approximation.

school Traditions differ

Some regions use Surya Siddhanta conventions; where traditions conflict, your family panchang wins.

lightbulb A real example — shortlisting a fortnight in May 2026

A Bengaluru family wants the upanayana in the second half of May 2026, mornings only, and asks the calculator to rank every day in that fortnight.

Result: Scanning 14–28 May 2026, the calculator returns two mornings — for instance, Thursday 21 May 2026, 7:18–9:45 AM IST — each pairing a classical-list nakshatra (Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Shravana and similar) present at sunrise with a non-Rikta tithi. The other twelve days are dropped with reasons shown: a Rikta tithi (4th/9th/14th), an unsuitable weekday lord, or a nakshatra outside the classical list.

What this means: The example shows the tool is a filter, not a single-date oracle: the family takes the two or three surviving mornings to their purohit, who confirms against the grihya sutra they follow. May satisfies the Uttarayana preference, but some families additionally avoid the boy's birth month — a convention the calculator flags rather than enforces.

Formula & methodology

Formula: Tithi = ⌊(Moon−Sun elongation) ÷ 12°⌋; Nakshatra = ⌊Moon longitude ÷ 13°20'⌋; Vimshottari lord sequence Ketu→Venus→Sun→Moon→Mars→Rahu→Jupiter→Saturn→Mercury

How upanayana dates are shortlisted

The calculator treats the search as a filtering problem over candidate days. Each day is checked against four classical conditions: (1) the Moon's nakshatra at sunrise is on the traditional upanayana list — Pushya, Mrigashira, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Revati and the Uttara trio among them; (2) the tithi is not Rikta (the 4th, 9th or 14th of either fortnight); (3) the weekday lord is considered suitable; (4) the date falls in the preferred season, traditionally Uttarayana (roughly mid-January to mid-July).

Surviving days receive a morning window bounded by local sunrise and the muhurat span for your coordinates. These lists are conventional, not astronomical: which nakshatras and months count as acceptable differ between grihya sutras and regions, so the calculator reports its reasoning per date and expects the family's purohit to make the final call.

Frequently asked questions

What is Upanayana?
The sacred-thread initiation (yajnopavita dharana) marking a boy's entry into Vedic study — with Gayatri upadesha from the father or guru; called Munji in Karnataka, Yagnopavitham in the South.
Which nakshatras are chosen for upanayana?
Classical lists favour Pushya, Mrigashira, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Revati and Uttara-phalguni, avoiding Rikta tithis and Jupiter-Venus turbulence days.
Which age is right for upanayana?
Traditionally 7–11 years by the shastra ideal; families often pick a date aligned to the grihya convention they follow.
Why avoid certain months?
Some families avoid Dakshinayana mid-months or the boy's birth-month; others require the ceremony before monsoon's peak — conventions differ by grihya sutra.
