Formula & methodology

Formula: Rahu Kaal = sunrise + (segment−1) × (sunset − sunrise)/8, segment fixed per weekday

  1. Pick the date and enter your city’s latitude, longitude and UTC offset.
  2. The calculator computes local sunrise and sunset (NOAA solar algorithm).
  3. Daytime is split into 8 equal segments.
  4. The weekday selects which segment is Rahu Kaal (Mon 2nd, Sat 3rd, Fri 4th, Wed 5th, Thu 6th, Tue 7th, Sun 8th).

Worked example — Delhi, Wednesday 10 Jun 2026: sunrise 05:23, sunset 19:18, day length 13 h 55 m, so each segment is 1 h 44 m. The 5th segment runs 12:21 – 14:05 — that is Rahu Kaal. Gulika Kaal is 10:36 – 12:21 and Yamaganda 07:07 – 08:52.

Frequently asked questions

What is Rahu Kaal?
Rahu Kaal (Rahu Kalam) is a daily period of about 90 minutes ruled by Rahu, considered inauspicious for starting new work, journeys, purchases or ceremonies. It is one-eighth of the time between sunrise and sunset, so its clock time changes every day and city.
Why does Rahu Kaal change every day?
Two reasons: the segment number depends on the weekday (2nd eighth on Monday, 5th on Wednesday, 8th on Sunday…), and the day length depends on the date and your latitude. Both sunrise and sunset shift daily, so the same weekday still gives slightly different times across the year.
Is Rahu Kaal the same in every city?
No. It is computed from local sunrise and sunset. On the same Wednesday, Delhi’s Rahu Kaal can be 12:21–14:05 while a city further west or at another latitude gets noticeably different times. Always compute it for your own coordinates.
What should be avoided during Rahu Kaal?
Traditionally: starting a new venture, signing contracts, beginning a journey, housewarming, engagement or any first-time activity. Ongoing work, routine duties and anything already started earlier are not restricted. Hanuman worship during Rahu Kaal is actually considered favourable.
Is Rahu Kaal observed at night?
The classical Rahu Kaal applies to the daytime (sunrise to sunset). A parallel night sequence exists in some traditions, but almost all panchangs — including this calculator — publish the daytime Rahu Kaal, which is the one people plan around.
