Formula & methodology

Formula: Ishta Devata ← deity of the Atmakaraka (highest-degree planet; Rahu counted reverse)

  1. Enter birth date, time and place.
  2. The Atmakaraka (highest-degree planet among 8, Rahu reversed) is computed from sidereal longitudes.
  3. The deity traditionally linked to that karaka is recommended as your Ishta Devata.
  4. Your Moon nakshatra’s Vedic deity is added as a secondary devotion.

Worked example — 1 Jan 1990, 06:00, Delhi: Saturn is Atmakaraka at 21.98°, giving Lord Shani / Hanuman as the Ishta Devata; the Dhanishta Moon adds the Vasus as nakshatra deities.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Ishta Devata?
Your "chosen deity" — the divine form most natural for personal worship in this life. Jaimini astrology derives it from the chart, classically from the Atmakaraka and its Navamsa placement (Karakamsa).
How does this calculator find the Ishta Devata?
It computes your Atmakaraka — the highest-degree planet among eight, with Rahu counted in reverse — and recommends the deity tradition associates with that planet, e.g. Saturn → Shani/Hanuman in the worked example.
Is this the full Karakamsa method?
It is the accessible first step. The complete classical method also examines the 12th from the Karakamsa in the Navamsa (D9). For most seekers the Atmakaraka deity itself is the practical starting devotion.
Can my Ishta Devata differ from my family deity?
Yes — the Kula Devata is inherited by lineage while the Ishta Devata is personal to your chart. Tradition honours both: family deity in household ritual, Ishta in personal sadhana.
What practice is suggested once I know it?
A simple daily connection: the deity’s mantra (e.g. Hanuman Chalisa for Saturn-Hanuman), a weekly temple visit on the planet’s weekday, and remembering the deity before major undertakings.
