Why is it called Vimshottari?
“Vimshottari” means 120 — the full cycle’s length in years, the classical full human lifespan. It is the default dasha system of Parashari astrology; other systems (Ashtottari 108y, Yogini 36y) exist but Vimshottari is what astrologers mean by “dasha” unless stated.
Why these particular year counts?
Each graha’s span is fixed by the Parashara tradition: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17. Each lord also rules three of the 27 nakshatras, which is how the birth star selects your entry point into the cycle.
What matters more — the dasha lord or its house?
Both: the lord sets the theme, but its strength, sign, house and aspects in your birth chart decide the delivery. A well-placed Saturn gives one of the most productive 19-year runs; an afflicted Venus can make even the “best” dasha demanding.
