Formula & methodology

Formula: Start lord = janma nakshatra’s lord; balance = (1 − fraction of nakshatra traversed) × lord’s years; sequence fixed over 120 years

  2. The calculator finds the Moon’s nakshatra and how far through it the Moon had moved.
  3. The nakshatra’s lord starts the 120-year Vimshottari cycle with that proportional balance.
  4. The nine mahadashas are laid out with exact start/end dates and “current” highlighted.

What is a mahadasha?
The major planetary period of Vimshottari dasha — a 120-year cycle in which each of the nine grahas rules a fixed span (Venus 20y, Saturn 19y, Rahu 18y…). Your life’s chapters follow the sequence starting from your birth nakshatra’s lord.
How is the starting dasha decided?
By the Moon’s nakshatra at birth: its lord starts the cycle, and the unconsumed part of the nakshatra becomes the balance. Born with the Moon 60% through a Mars-ruled star, you begin with 40% of Mars’s 7 years — about 2.8 years — before the next lord takes over.
Why does everyone fear the Saturn mahadasha?
Reputation more than rule. Saturn’s 19 years reward discipline and patience and famously build careers — but they punish shortcuts, which created the fear. The dasha’s real quality depends on Saturn’s strength and house in your own chart, not on the planet’s name.
Do mahadasha dates differ between calculators?
By days to a few weeks, usually from ayanamsa choice and the year-length convention (365.25-day solar years here vs 360-day savana years in some traditions). The sequence and lords never differ; treat boundary months as transition zones rather than cliff edges.
What runs inside a mahadasha?
