Moon sign (rashi)Sign of the sidereal Moon at birth — your Vedic calendar identity
Sign lordPlanet ruling the rashi; its condition colours your Moon
Nakshatra + padaThe finer 13°20′ division inside the rashi — naming and dasha basis

Rashi for horoscopesDaily/weekly “rashifal” in Indian media means this Moon sign, not the Sun sign

Formula & methodology

Formula: Rashi = ⌊sidereal Moon longitude / 30°⌋; sidereal = tropical − Lahiri ayanamsa

  1. Enter birth date and time (and place for best precision).
  2. The calculator computes the Moon’s tropical longitude at that moment.
  3. Subtracting the Lahiri ayanamsa gives the sidereal longitude; its 30° division is your rashi.
  4. The nakshatra-pada inside it and the rashi lord are returned, with sun signs for context.

Worked example — 1 Jan 1990, 06:00 IST: sidereal Moon 303.1° → Kumbha (Aquarius), lord Saturn, nakshatra Dhanishta pada 3; Vedic sun sign Dhanu while the Western one is Capricorn — a normal one-sign offset.

Frequently asked questions

What is a rashi?
Your Moon sign: the sidereal zodiac sign the Moon occupied at birth. In Indian practice it is the primary “your sign” — rashifal columns, festival horoscopes, gemstone advice and matching all key off the rashi rather than the Sun sign.
Why does the Moon sign need a birth time?
The Moon crosses a sign in about 2½ days, so most birthdays pin it — but roughly one day in three contains a sign change. With a birth time the result is exact; without one, this calculator uses the date’s default time, and boundary cases deserve a recheck.
Rashi vs sun sign — why do they differ?
Different bodies and different zodiacs: the rashi tracks the Moon in the sidereal zodiac, the popular Western sign tracks the Sun in the tropical zodiac. The same person can easily be a Kumbha-rashi Capricorn-sun — both labels are simultaneously true in their own systems.
What is the rashi used for in daily life?
Daily and weekly predictions (rashifal), choosing a baby’s ritual name, gemstone and mantra recommendations, the Sade Sati calculation (Saturn’s transit from your Moon sign), and the Bhakoot/Nadi factors of marriage matching all use the Moon rashi.
Can my rashi change with a different ayanamsa?
Only if your Moon sits within a degree or so of a sign boundary. Lahiri — used here and by official panchangs — differs from Raman/KP ayanamsas by under half a degree, so flips are rare but possible; the displayed Moon longitude lets you judge the margin.
