Formula & methodology

Formula: Tithi number = ⌈(Moon longitude − Sun longitude) / 12°⌉; 1–15 Shukla, 16–30 Krishna

  1. Enter the date and your city’s coordinates and UTC offset.
  2. The calculator computes the Moon’s and Sun’s ecliptic longitudes at local sunrise (Meeus series).
  3. Their angular difference divided by 12° gives the tithi (each tithi is one 12° step of elongation).
  4. The same chart yields nakshatra, yoga and karana for the day.

Worked example — Delhi, 10 Jun 2026: at sunrise 05:23 the Moon–Sun elongation sits in the 25th step, i.e. Krishna Dashami of Jyeshtha, with nakshatra Uttara Bhadrapada (pada 4), yoga Sukarma and karana Vishti — matching the published panchang for that day.

Frequently asked questions

What is a tithi?
A tithi is a lunar day: the time the Moon needs to gain 12° of longitude over the Sun. Thirty tithis make one lunar month — fifteen waxing (Shukla) from new moon to full moon, and fifteen waning (Krishna) back to new moon.
Why is the tithi taken at sunrise?
Hindu calendars assign each civil day the tithi prevailing at local sunrise (udaya tithi). A tithi lasts between roughly 19 and 26 hours, so it rarely aligns with midnight-to-midnight — the sunrise rule gives one unambiguous tithi per day for vrats and festivals.
Can two days have the same tithi, or a tithi be skipped?
Yes. If a long tithi spans two sunrises it repeats (vriddhi); if a short one begins and ends between sunrises it never “owns” a day (kshaya). This is why festival dates occasionally differ between panchangs and regions.
What are paksha, yoga and karana?
Paksha is the lunar fortnight (Shukla waxing, Krishna waning). Yoga is one of 27 combinations of the Sun-plus-Moon longitudes. A karana is half a tithi (6° of elongation). Together with the weekday and nakshatra, these are the five limbs (panchang) of the Hindu day.
How accurate is this calculator?
It uses Meeus-series Sun and Moon longitudes (validated to within a few hundredths of a degree) with Lahiri ayanamsa and NOAA sunrise times, so the tithi matches mainstream Drik panchangs. Near a tithi boundary (±1–2 minutes of sunrise), regional panchangs may differ — verify locally for ritual edge cases.
