Interpretation guide

Score / 36Traditional verdict
28 – 36Excellent match
24 – 27Very good
18 – 23Acceptable — proceed
Below 18Not recommended without remedies/consultation
Nadi = 0 or Bhakoot = 0A dosha — traditionally needs specific cancellation rules even if the total is high

lightbulb A real-world example — Ashtakoot Milan for two charts

Bride: Nakshatra Rohini (Pada 3). Groom: Nakshatra Hasta (Pada 1). Both checked against the 8 koots: Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, Nadi.

Result: Total Guna Milan: 28 / 36. Above the 18 minimum and above the 25 'very good' threshold. Bhakoot dosha clear, Nadi dosha clear.

What this means: 28/36 is considered an excellent match. Traditionally, anything 18+ is acceptable; 24+ is favourable; 28+ is very favourable. Note: Nadi dosha (when both birth-Nadis are the same) is the most weighted in this 8-koot system. If your match shows Bhakoot or Nadi dosha, ask the astrologer about Dosha Pariharas before drawing any conclusion.

Formula & methodology

Formula: Guna Milan total = Varna(1) + Vashya(2) + Tara(3) + Yoni(4) + Maitri(5) + Gana(6) + Bhakoot(7) + Nadi(8) = 36

  1. Enter both partners’ birth dates and times (place sharpens the Moon position).
  2. The calculator finds each person’s Moon nakshatra and rashi (sidereal, Lahiri).
  3. The eight kootas are scored from the two nakshatras/rashis per the classical tables.
  4. The total out of 36 is shown with the heavyweight kootas — Gana, Bhakoot, Nadi — itemised.

Worked example — A: 15 May 1995 08:30 (Anuradha, Vrishchika rashi); B: 3 Nov 1996 19:15 (Ashlesha, Karka rashi): total 31/36 — Excellent, with Nadi 8/8 and Bhakoot 7/7 but Gana 0/6, showing how a strong total can still hide a weak koota worth discussing.

Frequently asked questions

What is Guna Milan?
The North-Indian Ashtakoota method of matching two birth charts through eight factors (kootas) scored 1 to 8 — 36 points total. It compares the partners’ Moon nakshatras and signs; 18+ is conventionally acceptable, 28+ excellent.
What is Nadi dosha and why is it 8 points?
Nadi groups all 27 nakshatras into Adi, Madhya and Antya. Partners sharing the same nadi score zero in the heaviest koota — Nadi dosha — traditionally linked to health/progeny concerns. Classical texts list cancellations (same rashi different nakshatra, etc.), so a zero deserves expert review, not panic.
Is 36/36 required for marriage?
No — even Rama and Sita’s legendary score is quoted as 33. Most successful traditional matches sit in the 20s. Scores guide discussion; individual chart strength, Mangal dosha status and dasha timing matter as much as the headline number.
What if the score is below 18?
Tradition recommends deeper analysis rather than outright rejection: check whether the deficit comes from Gana/Bhakoot/Nadi and whether cancellation yogas exist, compare overall chart strength, and consult a practitioner about remedies. Many matches with low Guna scores are cleared on full-chart review.
Why does this score differ slightly from another website?
Boundary cases: a Moon within minutes of a nakshatra or sign edge can flip Tara, Bhakoot or Nadi between systems with different ayanamsa or rounding. This tool uses Lahiri with computed lunar positions; for a decision-grade report, have the result verified manually.
