Formula & methodology

Formula: D1 position = sidereal longitude (tropical − Lahiri ayanamsa); Varga D-n maps each 30°/n arc to a sign

  1. Enter birth date, time and coordinates with UTC offset.
  2. Tropical positions (Meeus Sun/Moon, Standish planets) are converted to sidereal with the Lahiri ayanamsa.
  3. The ascendant is computed from local sidereal time and latitude.
  4. The D1 Rashi chart is rendered: lagna, Moon nakshatra-pada, tithi and the 9 planet placements that seed every higher Varga.

Worked example — 1 Jan 1990, 06:00, Delhi: lagna Vrishchika 28.6°, Moon in Kumbha (Dhanishta pada 3), Sun in Dhanu 16.6°, tithi Shukla Chaturthi — matching mainstream panchang software to a fraction of a degree.

Frequently asked questions

What are divisional charts (Vargas)?
Vargas slice each 30° sign into n equal parts and map the parts back onto the zodiac, producing specialised charts: D9 for marriage, D10 for career, D7 for children. All of them are derived from the D1 Rashi positions this calculator computes.
What does this calculator return?
Your complete D1 foundation: exact ascendant degree, Moon sign with nakshatra-pada, birth tithi and sidereal positions of all nine grahas — e.g. Vrishchika lagna 28.6° for the 1 Jan 1990 Delhi sample.
Why is D1 the most important chart?
Every divisional chart is mathematically derived from D1 longitudes, and classical texts read D1 first for body, character and life direction. A Varga can modify, but never replace, the D1 promise.
Which ayanamsa is used?
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the Indian government standard. That keeps sign and nakshatra placements consistent with drik panchang and most professional software.
How accurate are the planet positions?
Sun and Moon use Meeus series accurate to under 0.02°; the five planets use Standish elements accurate to a few tenths of a degree — comfortably inside a 3°20′ nakshatra pada.
