Formula & methodology

Formula: SAV(sign) = Σ over 7 planets of bindus contributed by 8 reference points (7 planets + Lagna); Σ all signs = 337

  1. Enter your birth date, time, and birth-place coordinates with UTC offset.
  2. The calculator computes sidereal (Lahiri) positions for the 7 classical planets and the ascendant.
  3. For each planet it applies the classical BPHS benefic-place tables from all 8 reference points (7 planets + Lagna).
  4. Bindus are summed per sign into the Sarvashtakavarga, which always totals exactly 337.

Worked example — 1 Jan 1990, 06:00, Delhi: Vrishchika lagna chart gives Kanya 36 bindus (strong), Mesha and Vrishchika (Lagna) 32 each, while Makara holds just 23 (weak). Total: 337 bindus, the invariant every correct Ashtakavarga must satisfy.

What is Ashtakavarga in Vedic astrology?
Ashtakavarga scores each zodiac sign by counting benefic points (bindus) contributed by eight reference points — the seven classical planets plus the Lagna. The combined chart (Sarvashtakavarga) shows which signs give strong or weak transit results.
Why does Sarvashtakavarga always total 337?
The BPHS contributor tables fix each planet’s total: Sun 48, Moon 49, Mars 39, Mercury 54, Jupiter 56, Venus 52, Saturn 39. Those sum to 337 in every horoscope — only the distribution across signs changes.
How many bindus is a strong sign?
The per-sign average is 337 ÷ 12 ≈ 28. Signs with 30+ bindus are considered strong for transits; 25 or fewer is weak. In our sample chart Kanya scores 36 (strong) and Makara 23 (weak).
What is the difference between BAV and SAV?
Bhinnashtakavarga (BAV) is one planet’s own 12-sign bindu chart (e.g. Jupiter’s 56 points). Sarvashtakavarga (SAV) adds the seven BAV charts together into the 337-point master grid this calculator shows.
