Formula & methodology

Formula: Kemdrum present if no planet (excl. Sun, Rahu, Ketu) occupies the 2nd, 12th or same sign from the Moon

  1. Enter birth date, time and place.
  2. Sidereal sign positions are computed for the Moon and the five tara grahas (Mars–Saturn, excluding Sun and nodes per the classical rule).
  3. The signs 2nd and 12th from the Moon, and the Moon’s own sign, are checked for occupants.
  4. If all are empty, Kemdrum Dosha is reported.

Worked example — 1 Jan 1990, 06:00, Delhi: the Kumbha Moon has planetary support around it, so Kemdrum is not present — the calculator states the exact condition it tested.

Frequently asked questions

What is Kemdrum Dosha?
A lunar yoga formed when the Moon stands completely alone — no planet in the 2nd or 12th sign from it, none conjunct. Classical texts associate the isolated Moon with emotional ups and downs and fluctuating support.
Are the Sun, Rahu and Ketu counted?
No. The classical rule uses only the five tara grahas — Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn. The Sun is excluded because it is always near the Moon’s 2nd/12th around new moon, and shadow planets never count.
How common is Kemdrum Dosha?
Quite common — rough estimates put it near 1 chart in 4, which is exactly why cancellations matter. The presence of the bare yoga alone is not a verdict on a life.
What cancels Kemdrum Dosha?
Major bhangas include the Moon in a kendra (1/4/7/10) from the Lagna, the Moon aspected by Jupiter, or a strong benefic in a kendra from the Moon. Many "Kemdrum" charts are effectively neutralised.
What are the traditional remedies?
Monday Shiva worship, Chandra mantra (Om Som Somaya Namah), wearing pearl after consultation, and respect/service to the mother — all aimed at strengthening the Moon.
