Formula & methodology

Formula: Sankashti day = civil day whose sunrise carries the Krishna Chaturthi (19th tithi)

  1. Enter the year.
  2. The calculator lists every day whose sunrise tithi is the 4th of the waning fortnight — one per lunar month, 12–14 in a year.
  3. Weekdays are attached; any Tuesday entry is an Angarki Sankashti.
  4. The fast runs until local moonrise that night (moonrise on Krishna Chaturthi is typically 2–3 hours after sunset).

Worked example — 2026 opens with Sakat Chauth on Wednesday, 7 January 2026 and includes an Angarki Sankashti on Tuesday, 5 May 2026; the year carries 13–14 observances, one per lunar month.

Frequently asked questions

What is Sankashti Chaturthi?
The Ganesha fast kept on the Chaturthi (4th tithi) of every waning fortnight. “Sankashti” means deliverance from difficulties; devotees fast from sunrise and break the fast only after moonrise, offering arghya to the moon and durva to Ganesha.
Why is the fast broken at moonrise, not sunset?
The vrat’s defining ritual is the evening moon offering — Chaturthi’s moon is linked to Ganesha’s grace in the Puranic story. On Krishna Chaturthi the moon rises late (roughly 2–3 hours after sunset), so the panchang’s moonrise time for your city decides when you eat.
What is Angarki Sankashti?
A Sankashti that falls on a Tuesday (Angaraka = Mars). It is considered as meritorious as a whole year of monthly Sankashtis, and Maharashtra’s Ganesha temples see their largest crowds on it. In 2026, 5 May is an Angarki.
How is Sankashti different from Vinayaka Chaturthi?
Both are monthly Chaturthi fasts for Ganesha: Sankashti is on the waning-fortnight Chaturthi with a moonrise-bound fast, Vinayaka is on the waxing-fortnight Chaturthi with a midday puja. The annual Ganesh Chaturthi festival is simply the Bhadrapada Vinayaka Chaturthi.
Which Sankashti is the most important?
The Magha-month one — Sakat Chauth (7 January in 2026) — especially in North India, where mothers fast for their children’s welfare. Tilkut offerings are typical. In Maharashtra every Sankashti is observed, with Angarki Tuesdays ranked highest.
