Lagna lordRuler of the ascendant — its placement colours the whole life pattern
Moon sign alongsideMind/emotions; some traditions read both lagna and chandra-lagna charts
Sun sign alongsideVitality and authority — completes the big three of the chart

Formula & methodology

Formula: Lagna = ecliptic degree intersecting the eastern horizon: atan2(cos RAMC, −(sin RAMC·cos ε + tan φ·sin ε)) − ayanamsa

  1. Enter birth date, time to the minute, and birthplace coordinates with UTC offset.
  2. The calculator converts the moment to local sidereal time (RAMC).
  3. The horizon–ecliptic intersection formula gives the rising degree, then Lahiri ayanamsa makes it sidereal.
  4. The lagna sign, its exact degree and the lagna lord are returned with Moon and Sun signs.

Worked example — 1 Jan 1990, 06:00 IST, Delhi (28.61°N 77.21°E): lagna Vrishchika 28.6°, lord Mars; Moon sign Kumbha, Sun sign Dhanu. At 28.6° the ascendant is minutes from Dhanu — a textbook case of why the recorded birth minute matters.

Frequently asked questions

What is the lagna?
The zodiac sign (and exact degree) rising on the eastern horizon at your birth time and place. It anchors the chart: the lagna sign is your 1st house, governing self, body and life direction, and every other house counts from it.
How fast does the lagna change?
It sweeps the whole zodiac daily — roughly one degree every four minutes, one sign every two hours on average (faster/slower by latitude and sign). That is why the lagna, unlike the Moon or Sun sign, demands an accurate birth time.
What does the lagna lord do?
The planet ruling your ascendant sign becomes your chart’s functional manager. Its sign, house and strength shape vitality and the life pattern — e.g., Vrishchika lagna is ruled by Mars, so Mars’s condition is read first by any jyotishi.
My birth time is uncertain by 30 minutes — is my lagna reliable?
Possibly not: 30 minutes moves the ascendant ~7°, and if you were born near a sign boundary the lagna flips. Compute both candidate charts (this tool shows the exact degree) and a practitioner can rectify using life events. Degrees under 2° or over 28° are the warning zone.
Lagna vs rashi vs sun sign — which one am I?
All three, for different things: lagna for the chart’s houses and personality-in-action, rashi (Moon sign) for the mind and for panchang/dasha purposes, and the Sun sign for the solar identity Western astrology popularised. Vedic practice reads lagna first, Moon a close second.
