Formula & methodology

Formula: Sidereal longitude = tropical longitude − ayanamsa (≈24.2° in 2026, Lahiri)

  1. Enter your birth date (and time for cusp birthdays).
  2. The calculator computes the Sun’s tropical longitude — the Western sign is that longitude’s 30° division from the equinox.
  3. Subtracting the Lahiri ayanamsa gives the sidereal longitude and the Vedic sign.
  4. Both are shown with the exact degrees so cusp cases are transparent.

Worked example — born 1 Jan 1990: tropical Sun 280.3° → Capricorn (Western); sidereal Sun 256.6° → Dhanu / Sagittarius (Vedic). The ~23.7° ayanamsa of 1990 moves the label one sign back.

Why are my Western and Vedic sun signs different?
They measure from different zero points. The tropical zodiac starts at the spring-equinox point, which precesses; the sidereal zodiac stays with the stars. The gap (ayanamsa) is about 24° today, so roughly four of five people drop back one sign in the Vedic system.
Which one is my “real” sign?
Both are internally consistent systems. Western horoscope columns mean the tropical sign; a jyotishi means the sidereal one — and in Vedic practice the Moon sign (rashi) and lagna matter more than the Sun sign anyway. Use the system matching the astrology you are reading.
What is the ayanamsa?
The accumulating angle between the equinox point and the fixed-star zero of the sidereal zodiac, caused by Earth’s 25,800-year axial precession. Official Indian panchangs use the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) value — about 24°12′ in 2026, growing ~50.3″ per year.
I was born on a cusp — which sign am I?
There is no blend: the Sun is in exactly one sign at your birth moment. Boundary dates (e.g., 19–21 March for Aries) need your birth time and year — the Sun crosses signs at a different hour each year. This calculator prints the Sun’s degree so you can see how close the call is.
Does the “13th sign” Ophiuchus change anything?
No. Both zodiacs are 12 equal 30° segments of the ecliptic, not constellation boundaries. Ophiuchus is a constellation the Sun crosses, but it has never been a zodiac sign in either the Western or the Vedic system.
