Formula & methodology

Formula: Dosha if room direction ∉ best-direction set; plot dosha if L:W > 2 or < 0.5

  1. Select the room/purpose and the direction it occupies, plus plot length and width.
  2. The room’s direction is tested against the Pancha-Bhoota zone map (NE-water, SE-fire, SW-earth, NW-air).
  3. Special combinations are flagged: kitchen in NE (Agni dosha), toilet in NE/E (sacred-zone dosha).
  4. The plot ratio is checked — beyond 2:1 counts as a shape dosha.

Worked example: a main entrance facing East on a 40×30 ft plot returns "No major dosha" — East is among the entrance’s favourable directions and the 1.33 ratio is well-proportioned.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Vastu dosha?
A mismatch between a room’s function and the directional element it occupies — e.g. a fire-zone kitchen placed in the water-zone NE. Doshas are graded by how sacred the violated zone is, NE being most sensitive.
Which doshas does this calculator detect?
Direction doshas for seven room types, the Agni dosha (kitchen in NE), toilets in the NE/E sacred zone, and elongated-plot shape doshas (length:width beyond 2:1).
Are Vastu doshas fixable without demolition?
Mostly yes — function swaps, repositioning the flame within a kitchen, keeping toilet doors closed, mirrors/light to "extend" cramped zones. Structural fixes are a last resort; a consultant can prioritise.
Which direction is worst for a toilet?
North-East — the Ishanya (water/sacred) corner reserved for pooja and openness. NW and west-of-SW placements are the conventional safe zones.
Does plot shape really matter in Vastu?
Classical texts prefer square or modestly rectangular plots (ratio ≤ 2:1). Long, ribbon-like plots scatter the zones; zoning the extra length as garden or parking is the usual remedy.
