Formula & methodology

Formula: Diwali = the day Kartik Amavasya prevails during Pradosh Kaal (just after sunset)

  1. Enter any Gregorian year.
  2. The calculator scans the year for days when the new-moon tithi (Amavasya) is running shortly after sunset — the Pradosh Kaal rule used for Lakshmi Puja.
  3. It then requires the lunar month to be Kartik (Amanta), identified from the Sun’s sidereal sign at the previous new moon.
  4. The matching civil date and weekday are returned.

Worked example — 2026: Amavasya begins the morning of 8 Nov and ends the next morning, so it prevails at sunset on Sunday, 8 November 2026 — Lakshmi Puja night, matching Drik panchang. The sunrise-tithi method would wrongly give 9 Nov; the Pradosh rule is the correct one for Diwali.

Frequently asked questions

When is Diwali in 2026?
Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) is on Sunday, 8 November 2026. Amavasya tithi runs from the morning of 8 Nov to the morning of 9 Nov, so it prevails during Pradosh Kaal (after sunset) on the 8th — the moment Lakshmi Puja requires.
Why is Diwali on Amavasya?
Diwali celebrates Lakshmi’s emergence and Rama’s return on the darkest night of Kartik — the new moon. Lamps are lit precisely because there is no moonlight; Lakshmi Puja is performed during Pradosh Kaal while Amavasya is running.
Why do some calendars show a different Diwali date?
When Amavasya spans two evenings, regional rules pick different days, and sunset times differ across countries — the USA can observe a day earlier or later than India. This calculator follows the mainstream India rule: Amavasya prevailing at Pradosh Kaal, IST.
How does the date move each year?
Twelve lunar months are about 354 days, so Diwali drifts ~11 days earlier each year until an Adhik (leap) month pushes it back. It always lands between mid-October and mid-November: 1 Nov 2024, 20 Oct 2025, 8 Nov 2026, 29 Oct 2027.
What are the five days of Diwali 2026?
Dhanteras Fri 6 Nov, Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali) Sat 7 Nov, Lakshmi Puja Sun 8 Nov, Govardhan Puja Mon 9 Nov (some regions Tue 10), and Bhai Dooj Tue 10 Nov — dates per the standard India panchang; confirm regional variants locally.
