Formula: Day hora length = (sunset − sunrise)/12; lords follow the Chaldean order Sun→Venus→Mercury→Moon→Saturn→Jupiter→Mars repeating

  1. Enter date and your city’s coordinates and UTC offset.
  2. The calculator finds local sunrise/sunset and divides daytime into 12 horas.
  3. The weekday lord rules the first hora (Wednesday → Mercury).
  4. Each next hora follows the Chaldean sequence Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars — repeating through the day.

Worked example — Delhi, Wednesday 10 Jun 2026 (sunrise 05:23): Mercury hora 05:23–06:32, Moon 06:32–07:42, Saturn 07:42–08:52, Jupiter 08:52–10:01, Mars 10:01–11:11, Sun 11:11–12:21, Venus 12:21–13:30, then Mercury again — so a student would favour the morning Mercury or Jupiter horas.

What is a hora?
A hora is a planetary hour — one-twelfth of the time between sunrise and sunset (day horas) or sunset and next sunrise (night horas). Each hora is ruled by one of the seven classical planets and inherits that planet’s nature, making horas a quick muhurat filter.
How is the first hora of the day decided?
The day’s ruling planet owns the sunrise hora: Sun on Sunday, Moon on Monday, Mars on Tuesday, Mercury on Wednesday, Jupiter on Thursday, Venus on Friday, Saturn on Saturday. The sequence then descends in the Chaldean order, which is also why weekdays have their familiar order.
Which hora is best for buying gold or starting a business?
Venus hora suits luxury and vehicle purchases; Mercury hora suits trade, accounts and contracts; Jupiter hora is the classic choice for financial beginnings, marriage talks and anything sacred. Combine the hora with a good Choghadiya and a window clear of Rahu Kaal for a stronger muhurat.
Are day and night horas the same length?
Only at the equinox. Day horas stretch in summer (long days) and shrink in winter; night horas do the opposite. On 10 Jun 2026 in Delhi a day hora lasts about 70 minutes, not 60 — which is why hora tables must be computed from real sunrise/sunset.
Hora vs Choghadiya — what’s the difference?
Both slice the day from sunrise, but Choghadiya makes 8 segments with quality labels (Amrit, Rog…) while horas make 12 segments each ruled by a planet. Choghadiya answers “is this time good or bad”; hora answers “what kind of work does this time favour”. Many people require both to agree.
