Formula & methodology

Formula: Atmakaraka = planet with max(longitude mod 30°); Rahu counted as 30° − (longitude mod 30°)

  1. Enter birth date, time and place coordinates.
  2. Sidereal (Lahiri) longitudes are computed for Sun through Saturn plus Rahu.
  3. Each planet’s degree within its sign is extracted; Rahu is counted in reverse per Jaimini rule.
  4. The highest-degree planet is your Atmakaraka.

Worked example — 1 Jan 1990, 06:00, Delhi: Saturn sits at 21.98° of its sign, the highest of the eight karakas, so Saturn is the Atmakaraka — pointing to Lord Shani/Hanuman as the recommended deity, with Moon in Kumbha and Vrishchika rising.

What is the Atmakaraka?
In Jaimini astrology the Atmakaraka ("soul significator") is the planet with the highest degree in any sign in your birth chart. It describes the soul’s core desire and the life lessons that dominate your incarnation.
How is the Atmakaraka calculated?
Take each planet’s degree within its sign (0–30°) and pick the highest. Rahu is special: being a shadow planet that moves backwards, its degree is counted as 30° minus its position. In our sample chart Saturn wins at 21.98°.
Is Rahu included as Atmakaraka?
The 8-karaka scheme (used here) includes Rahu, counted in reverse; the older 7-karaka scheme excludes it. Most modern Jaimini practitioners include Rahu, so a chart can have Rahu as Atmakaraka.
What does a Saturn Atmakaraka mean?
Saturn as soul planet points to lessons of patience, duty and service — growth through perseverance rather than shortcuts. Worship of Shani or Hanuman is traditionally recommended to ease the path.
How is Atmakaraka different from the Lagna lord?
The Lagna lord rules your rising sign and shapes personality and health; the Atmakaraka is degree-based and describes the soul’s deeper agenda. The two can be the same planet but usually are not.
