Formula & methodology

Formula: Pradosh day = civil day whose sunrise carries Trayodashi (13th tithi) of either paksha; puja at twilight

  1. Enter the year.
  2. The calculator lists every day whose sunrise tithi is the 13th — of both the waxing and waning fortnights — about 24 days a year.
  3. Weekdays are attached, since Soma/Bhauma/Shani Pradosh carry special significance.
  4. The puja itself is done during Pradosh Kaal — roughly the 1.5 hours after local sunset.

Worked example — 2026 has 24 Pradosh days, opening with Guru Pradosh on Thursday, 1 January 2026, then Krishna Pradosh on 16 January and Shani Pradosh on Saturday, 31 January. Evening worship in Delhi that Saturday would run from sunset (~18:05) for about 1.5–2 hours.

Frequently asked questions

What is Pradosh Vrat?
A Shiva fast observed on the Trayodashi (13th tithi) of each fortnight — twice a lunar month, around 24 times a year. The defining worship is in Pradosh Kaal, the twilight window just after sunset, when Shiva is said to dance on Kailasa in supreme delight.
Is Pradosh only on Shukla Trayodashi?
No — both pakshas count. Each lunar month carries a Shukla and a Krishna Pradosh, which is why a full year lists about 24 dates. (Some printed lists show only one fortnight; the classical vrata texts and major panchangs include both.)
What are Soma, Bhauma and Shani Pradosh?
Pradosh days named by their weekday: Monday’s Soma Pradosh, Tuesday’s Bhauma Pradosh and Saturday’s Shani Pradosh, each with a special benefit attached — Shani Pradosh is the most sought-after, believed to ease Saturn afflictions like Sade Sati.
When exactly is the puja done?
During Pradosh Kaal — conventionally from sunset to about 1.5–2 hours after (some texts: 3 ghatis before to 3 after sunset). The fast runs through the day; after the twilight abhisheka with bilva, milk and water, the fast is broken.
What if Trayodashi and Ekadashi lists overlap in my calendar?
They never share a day — Ekadashi is the 11th tithi, Pradosh the 13th — but they sit close: a Pradosh typically follows each Ekadashi by two days, so devotees often fast on the 11th and again on the 13th. Check the year list above to plan both sequences.
