Formula & methodology

Formula: Grahan Dosha present if angular distance(Sun or Moon, Rahu or Ketu) < 12°

  1. Enter birth date, time and place.
  2. Sidereal longitudes of Sun, Moon, Rahu and Ketu are computed.
  3. The smallest angular separation of each luminary from each node is measured.
  4. If any separation is under the classical 12° orb, the dosha and its type are reported.

Worked example — 1 Jan 1990, 06:00, Delhi: the Moon in Kumbha falls within 12° of a node, so Chandra Grahan Dosha is present while the Sun stays clear — the calculator names the luminary, the node and the orb it used.

What is Grahan Dosha?
A birth-chart condition where the Sun or Moon sits close to Rahu or Ketu — the configuration that causes eclipses. Within about 12° the luminary is considered "eclipsed", which classical texts read as a dosha affecting confidence (Sun) or mind (Moon).
Does being born during an actual eclipse matter?
Birth during a visible eclipse is the strongest form, but the dosha is judged from longitudes: any chart with Sun/Moon conjunct a node within orb carries it, eclipse visible or not.
What orb does this calculator use?
A 12° orb on either side of Rahu and Ketu, the common classical standard. Tighter conjunctions (under 5°) are read as stronger manifestations of the dosha.
