Formula & methodology

Formula: Ekadashi day = civil day whose sunrise carries the 11th tithi (Shukla or Krishna)

  1. Enter the year.
  2. The calculator computes the Moon–Sun elongation at sunrise for every day of the year.
  3. Days whose sunrise tithi is the 11th of either fortnight are listed — normally 24 per year.
  4. Each date is labelled Shukla or Krishna; your tradition’s names (Shattila, Nirjala, Devshayani…) attach by month.

Worked example — 2026 opens with Krishna Ekadashi on Wednesday, 14 January 2026 (Shattila Ekadashi) followed by Shukla Ekadashi on 29 January (Jaya Ekadashi), and the year carries 24 fasting days in total, matching published lists.

How many Ekadashis are there in 2026?
Twenty-four — one in each waxing and each waning fortnight of the twelve lunar months. The year starts with Shattila Ekadashi on 14 January 2026. Years with an Adhik (leap) month carry 26, adding Padmini and Parama Ekadashi.
What is the Ekadashi fast?
A Vishnu-dedicated fast from grains and beans (many observe fruits/milk only, some full nirahara) for the whole tithi, with evening worship and often a night vigil. It is broken next morning — the parana — within the Dwadashi window stated by the panchang.
Why do some calendars show my Ekadashi one day later?
The Vaishnava rule: if the 11th tithi at sunrise is mixed with Dashami (it began after the previous sunrise’s arunodaya), the fast shifts to the next day, Dwadashi. Smarta households fast on the sunrise-tithi day this calculator lists; ISKCON calendars apply the stricter shift.
Which Ekadashi is the most important?
Nirjala Ekadashi (Jyeshtha Shukla — falls in late May/June) observed without even water, is said to equal all 24. Devshayani and Prabodhini Ekadashi bracket the Chaturmas period, and Vaikuntha Ekadashi (Margashirsha/Dhanurmasa) draws huge temple crowds in the south.
Why must the fast not be broken on Ekadashi itself?
The vrata covers the full 11th tithi; eating before the tithi ends voids it. Parana is done after next sunrise while Dwadashi is running — but not during Hari Vasara (the first quarter of Dwadashi). The published parana window handles both rules; this tool gives the fasting dates.
