Formula & methodology

Formula: Sidereal longitude = tropical (Meeus/Standish series) − Lahiri ayanamsa; nodes from the lunar orbit elements

  1. Enter any date, time and location (UTC offset included).
  2. The calculator evaluates Meeus series for Sun/Moon and Standish orbital elements for Mercury–Saturn, plus the lunar node for Rahu (Ketu opposite).
  3. Lahiri ayanamsa converts tropical to sidereal longitudes.
  4. Each graha’s sign and degree-in-sign are listed; the lagna for that moment is included.

Worked example — 1 Jan 1990, 06:00 IST, Delhi: Sun Dhanu 16.6°, Moon Kumbha 3.1°, and Saturn early Makara — the documented Capricorn stellium era of January 1990. Accuracy: Sun/Moon within ~0.02°, planets within ~0.4° of ephemeris values.

Frequently asked questions

What are the nine grahas?
The seven visible bodies — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn — plus the two lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are not classical grahas; Vedic astrology’s rules, dashas and doshas are defined over these nine only.
Why are these positions different from an astronomy app?
Two reasons: this tool prints sidereal longitudes (tropical minus the ≈24° Lahiri ayanamsa), and it reports along the ecliptic rather than constellation boundaries. Subtracting your app’s tropical longitude by 24° should reproduce these values closely.
How accurate is this calculator?
Sun and Moon use Meeus trigonometric series (validated within a few hundredths of a degree); Mercury–Saturn use Standish’s JPL orbital elements (within ~0.4°); Rahu/Ketu use the mean lunar node. That is chart-grade accuracy — sign placements are reliable except within minutes of a boundary.
What are Rahu and Ketu’s positions physically?
The points where the Moon’s tilted orbit crosses the ecliptic — ascending (Rahu) and descending (Ketu). They regress through the zodiac in 18.6 years, always exactly opposite each other, and eclipses occur when the Sun and Moon meet near them.
Can I use this for transit (gochar) analysis?
Yes — set today’s date and compare current sign positions against your birth chart: Saturn’s sign from your Moon gives Sade Sati status, Jupiter’s house from lagna gives the gochar blessing map. The dedicated Sade Sati and dasha tools on this site automate the common cases.
