Formula: Bengali San ≈ CE − 593; Kollam ≈ CE − 825; Vikram ≈ CE + 57; Shaka = CE − 78 (each at its own new year)

Why does India have so many calendar eras?
Each region kept the era of its own historical dynasty or reform: Vikramaditya’s era in the north, the Shalivahana Shaka in the Deccan (later nationalised), the Bengali San from Akbar’s revenue reform, and Kerala’s Kollam era from 825 CE. All remain in daily festival use.
How do I convert CE to the Bengali year?
Subtract 593 from mid-April onward, 594 before it: June 2026 → 1433 BS. The year turns on Pohela Boishakh (14 April in Bangladesh’s fixed calendar, 14/15 April in West Bengal’s astronomical one).
How does the Malayalam (Kollam) year work?
It is a solar calendar starting at Chingam 1 (mid-August). Year = CE − 825 after Chingam, CE − 824 before it — so June 2026 is ME 1201, and ME 1202 begins in August 2026. Months follow the Sun’s zodiac signs (Chingam = Leo, Kanni = Virgo…).
Is the Tamil year the same as the Shaka year?
They run close because both are solar with a mid-April new year, and many Tamil panchangams print the Shaka number. Tradition also names each Tamil year in the 60-year Prabhava–Akshaya cycle — so a Tamil almanac may show a cycle name where this tool shows the era number.
Why do the eras change year on different dates?
Because each fixes its new year astronomically: lunisolar Chaitra Pratipada for Vikram, solar Mesha sankranti (14 April) for Bengali/Tamil, solar Simha sankranti (Chingam, mid-August) for Kollam. Between two of those boundaries the CE offsets differ by one — the converter resolves this automatically.
