Formula & methodology

Formula: Purnima day = civil day whose sunrise carries the 15th (full-moon) tithi

  1. Enter the year.
  2. The calculator finds the days whose sunrise elongation (Moon − Sun) lies in the 15th tithi arc (168°–180°).
  3. Each match is listed with its weekday — normally 12 or 13 days a year.
  4. Festival names attach by lunar month (Guru Purnima in Ashadha, Sharad Purnima in Ashwin…).

Worked example — 2026 has 13 Purnimas, opening with Paush Purnima on Saturday, 3 January 2026 and including Buddha Purnima on 1 May, Guru Purnima on 29 July and Raksha Bandhan’s Shravana Purnima on 28 August.

How many full moons are there in 2026?
Thirteen Purnima days, beginning 3 January 2026 and roughly every 29–30 days after. A lunar month is 29.53 days, so most years carry 12 full moons and about every third year squeezes in a 13th.
What is special about Purnima?
The full-moon tithi is sacred to Vishnu and the Moon; devotees observe Purnima vrat, take holy-river snan and perform Satyanarayan puja. Several major festivals ride specific Purnimas — Holi, Buddha Purnima, Guru Purnima, Raksha Bandhan, Sharad Purnima and Kartik Purnima.
Why can the “full moon” differ from NASA’s full-moon time?
Astronomical full moon is the instant of exact 180° elongation; the Hindu Purnima day is the civil day whose sunrise falls inside the 15th tithi. If exact fullness occurs late evening, the calendar Purnima can be the next morning’s date — a few hours’ difference, both correct in their own systems.
What is the difference between Purnima vrat day and snan day?
When the tithi starts mid-day, the fasting observance (upavas) is kept on the day the tithi is running at moonrise, while the bath/daan day is the sunrise-tithi day. Panchangs occasionally print them separately; this calculator returns the sunrise-tithi (snan/daan) date.
