Formula & methodology

Formula: Nakshatra index = ⌊(sidereal Moon longitude) / 13°20′⌋; pada = quarter of that arc

  1. Enter birth date, exact birth time and birthplace coordinates with the UTC offset in force at birth.
  2. The calculator computes the Moon’s tropical longitude, then subtracts the Lahiri ayanamsa for the sidereal position.
  3. Dividing by 13°20′ selects one of the 27 nakshatras; each quarter of it is a pada.
  4. Lookup tables supply the lord, deity, gana, nadi and naming syllable.

Worked example — born 1 Jan 1990, 06:00 IST, Delhi: sidereal Moon = 303.1°, which falls in Dhanishta pada 3 (lord Mars, gana Rakshasa, nadi Madhya, syllable “Gu”), with Moon sign Kumbha (Aquarius).

What is a nakshatra?
A nakshatra is one of 27 equal divisions (13°20′ each) of the sidereal zodiac. Your janma nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied at your birth — the most personal point in Vedic astrology, used for naming, matching, dasha timing and muhurat.
Why do I need the exact birth time?
The Moon moves about 13° per day — roughly one nakshatra. An error of a couple of hours can shift the pada, and near a boundary even the nakshatra itself. Time also changes the lagna rapidly, so use the most precise birth time you have.
What is a pada and why does it matter for names?
Each nakshatra has four padas of 3°20′. Tradition assigns every pada a starting syllable (e.g., Dhanishta pada 3 → “Gu”), used in the namkaran ceremony so the name resonates with the birth star. Padas also map nakshatras into the navamsa chart.
What do gana and nadi mean?
Gana groups stars into Deva (gentle), Manushya (balanced) and Rakshasa (assertive) temperaments — compared during marriage matching (6 points). Nadi (Adi/Madhya/Antya) reflects a traditional constitution type; partners sharing the same nadi trigger Nadi dosha, the heaviest factor (8 points) in Ashtakoota matching.
Which ayanamsa does this tool use?
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the ayanamsa used by official Indian panchangs and most software. Other ayanamsas (Raman, KP) differ by fractions of a degree and can flip a result only when the Moon sits within ~1° of a nakshatra boundary.
