Formula & methodology

Formula: Direction → ruling element → ideal room: NE (water) → entrance/meditation; E (air) → living/study; SE (fire) → kitchen; S (earth) → bedroom; SW (earth) → master bedroom; W (water) → dining; NW (air) → guest/storage; N (water) → treasury. Entrance ideally in the auspicious pada (3rd–4th) of its wall.

How the direction map is derived

Vastu assigns each of the eight compass directions a governing element and quality, and rooms are matched to the direction whose quality suits their function:

  • North-East (Ishanya) — water, clarity: pooja, meditation, study
  • East — air and morning sun: study, living areas
  • South-East (Agni) — fire: kitchen
  • South — earth: heavy storage, strong rooms
  • South-West (Nairutya) — earth, stability: master bedroom
  • West — space: dining, children's rooms
  • North-West (Vayavya) — air, movement: guest rooms, toilets
  • North (Kubera) — water, wealth: living room, valuables
