Formula & methodology

Formula: Panchang = vara + tithi + nakshatra + yoga + karana, all evaluated at local sunrise

  1. Choose the date and enter latitude, longitude and UTC offset.
  2. The calculator computes Sun and Moon longitudes at local sunrise (Meeus, Lahiri ayanamsa).
  3. Tithi comes from Moon−Sun elongation, nakshatra from the sidereal Moon, yoga from Sun+Moon, karana from half-tithis.
  4. Sunrise/sunset (NOAA) also yield Rahu Kaal, Gulika and Yamaganda for the day.

Worked example — Delhi, Wednesday 10 Jun 2026: sunrise 05:23, sunset 19:18; tithi Krishna Dashami, nakshatra Uttara Bhadrapada (pada 4), yoga Sukarma, karana Vishti; Rahu Kaal 12:21–14:05, Gulika 10:36–12:21, Yamaganda 07:07–08:52.

Frequently asked questions

What is a panchang?
Panchang literally means “five limbs”: the weekday (vara), lunar day (tithi), Moon’s star (nakshatra), Sun–Moon combination (yoga) and half-tithi (karana). Together they describe the astrological quality of a day and drive every festival, vrat and muhurat decision.
Why does a panchang depend on the city?
All five limbs are evaluated at local sunrise, and Rahu Kaal/Gulika windows are fractions of the local day length. Different longitude and latitude mean different sunrise times — so the same date can carry a different tithi label in, say, Delhi and New York.
What is the difference between Drik and traditional panchangs?
Drik (“observational”) panchangs compute real astronomical positions — what this tool does. Older Vakya/Surya-Siddhanta panchangs use ancient approximation verses and can drift by hours on tithi boundaries. Most modern Indian calendars, including this one, follow the Drik method with Lahiri ayanamsa.
What should I check before fixing an event date?
Typically: an auspicious tithi (avoid Rikta tithis 4/9/14 for beginnings), a favourable nakshatra, a good yoga, no Vishti (Bhadra) karana, and a clock window clear of Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika. The muhurat tools on this site combine these checks for specific ceremonies.
Why does my panchang app show a slightly different time?
Apps may use a different ayanamsa, a different sunrise convention (disc center vs upper limb, refraction), or your phone’s location instead of the city you intend. Differences of a few minutes are normal; the tithi/nakshatra only flip if a boundary falls inside that gap.
