Formula & methodology

Formula: Vikram Samvat ≈ CE + 57; Shaka Samvat = CE − 78 (both change at their new year, not 1 January)

  1. Enter your birth date (and time if known — it sharpens the nakshatra).
  2. The calculator returns your age in years, months and days.
  3. It computes the Moon’s sidereal position at birth for your janma nakshatra.
  4. It shows the running Vikram and Shaka Samvat years used in sankalpa and panchang references.

Worked example — born 1 Jan 1990: on 10 Jun 2026 the age is 36 years 5 months 9 days; janma nakshatra is Dhanishta; the current year is Vikram Samvat 2083 / Shaka Samvat 1948.

Frequently asked questions

How is a Hindu age different from a regular age?
The arithmetic age is the same, but tradition celebrates the janma-nakshatra birthday: the day in your birth lunar month when the Moon re-enters your birth star. Rituals (ayushya homa, shashtiabdapurti at 60) are timed by that, not by the Gregorian date.
What are Vikram and Shaka Samvat?
Two Hindu eras. Vikram Samvat (north India, Nepal) runs about 57 years ahead of CE and begins at Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (March/April). Shaka Samvat — the Indian national calendar — runs 78 behind CE and begins around 22 March. In June 2026 they read 2083 and 1948.
Why does the Samvat year not change on 1 January?
Each era has its own new year: Vikram at Chaitra Pratipada (or Kartik in Gujarat), Shaka at Chaitra 1. So between January and the Hindu new year, the offset to CE is one less — a common source of off-by-one errors that this calculator handles automatically.
What is a nakshatra birthday (janma nakshatra day)?
Each month the Moon revisits all 27 nakshatras, so your birth star recurs roughly every 27.3 days. The recurrence in your birth lunar month is your Vedic birthday — South-Indian families perform the birthday rites then. You need your janma nakshatra (shown above) and a panchang for the month.
Why does the pandit ask for samvat, masa, paksha and tithi?
Every sankalpa (ritual declaration) timestamps the rite in Hindu time: era year, lunar month, fortnight, tithi, weekday and nakshatra. This page gives the era years and your birth star; the daily panchang tool on this site supplies the masa, paksha and tithi for any date.
