When is namkaran traditionally done?
On the 11th or 12th day after birth — after the birth-impurity period — though many families now hold it within the first three months on any screened date. Premature or hospital-extended cases simply postpone; the rite has no expiry.
How is the baby’s name chosen?
The janma nakshatra’s pada fixes a starting syllable (e.g., Dhanishta pada 3 → “Gu”) — use the Newborn Kundali calculator for it. Families either make that the official name’s first letter or give a separate ritual rashi-name with it, keeping a modern everyday name.
What happens in the ceremony?
