Formula & methodology
Formula: Entry = Ramadan start + 19 days, at sunset; exit = Ramadan start + month length (Eid)
- Enter the first day of Ramadan and the expected month length (29/30).
- The calculator places entry at sunset after the 20th fast — the start of the 21st night — and exit at Eid’s confirmation.
Worked example — Ramadan 1447 beginning 18 Feb 2026 (30 days): enter the masjid before Maghrib on Tuesday 10 March, complete the ten nights, and exit at Eid on Friday 20 March 2026.

When do I enter I’tikaf?
Before sunset on the 20th day of fasting, so you are inside the masjid as the 21st night — the first of the last ten — begins. The calculator pins the exact civil date from your Ramadan start.
When does I’tikaf end?
At sunset ending the final fast, once the Eid moon is confirmed. With a 29-day month you exit a night earlier — the schedule covers whichever length you select.
What invalidates I’tikaf?
Leaving the masjid without genuine need (necessities like wudu and food are excepted), and marital intimacy (Quran 2:187). Scholars differ on details — your masjid’s program usually sets the practical rules.
Can women perform I’tikaf?
Yes — the Prophet’s wives performed it. Depending on madhhab and circumstances it may be in the masjid (with proper arrangements) or, per Hanafi fiqh, in the home’s designated prayer space.
Is a shorter I’tikaf valid?
The full last-ten-nights sunnah is the established practice, but most scholars permit voluntary i’tikaf of fewer days — even a night. Set your own dates and the masjid timetable does the rest.
