Formula & methodology
Formula: Fuel needed = Distance / MPG; Trip cost = Fuel needed x Price per gallon
The calculator divides trip distance by your MPG to find the fuel needed, then multiplies by the fuel price for total cost. Add the number of passengers to get a per-person share for carpools and road trips. Because cost scales inversely with MPG, an efficient vehicle or steadier driving meaningfully lowers the bill on long drives.
