Frequently asked questions

What is a freelance rate calculator?

It converts income goals, expenses, taxes, and expected billable time into hourly and daily pricing estimates.

What is billable utilization?

Utilization is the share of working time available for paid client work after sales, administration, leave, and other non-billable tasks.

Should taxes be included?

You can include an optional reserve assumption, but tax obligations depend on location and business structure.

How is a daily rate estimated?

The daily estimate multiplies the hourly rate by an eight-hour day.

Can this set a project price?

Multiply the hourly estimate by expected project hours and add a contingency appropriate to scope risk.

Why is my rate higher than an employee wage?

Freelancers usually cover non-billable time, benefits, equipment, leave, taxes, and business expenses themselves.

Every tool is plain HTML + JavaScript with the calculation logic compiled in. No spinner, no "verifying browser" splash, no five-second wait while ads load. Hit the page, fill the form, get the answer. Slow tools waste your time and ours.

devices Works on every device

Responsive design tested down to a 320px-wide phone screen. The input fields use native number/date keyboards on iOS and Android, the calculate button is thumb-sized, and the result still reads big and bold on the smallest screen. No app to download, ever.

sentiment_satisfied No funny business

No newsletter pop-ups, no "create an account to see the answer", no fake countdown, no fake stock counter, no upsell. Two ad slots per page (clearly labelled as Advertisement) keep the site free — that's the whole business model.

Formula & methodology

Formula: Hourly rate = (target income + expenses + taxes) / annual billable hours

How the result is calculated

Your freelance rate must cover more than a salary: it has to fund taxes, business costs and unbillable time. Dividing the full cost of doing business by realistic billable hours gives a rate that actually sustains you.

  1. Add your target take-home, business expenses and tax set-aside to get total revenue needed.
  2. Estimate realistic billable hours: subtract holidays, admin and sales time from your working hours.
  3. Divide total revenue needed by billable hours to get the minimum rate.

Example

Want $60k take-home, $10k expenses, $20k taxes = $90k needed. With 25 billable hours/week × 46 weeks = 1,150 hours: 90,000 / 1,150 = $78/hour.
