Formula & methodology

Formula: Base cooling BTU = area (sq ft) x 20; then adjust for sun, occupants, and kitchens

BTU (British Thermal Unit) per hour measures heating or cooling capacity. A common rule of thumb is about 20 BTU per square foot for cooling, then adjust up for sunny rooms, kitchens, and extra occupants, or down for shade. Undersizing leaves a room uncomfortable; oversizing cools too fast without removing humidity. The calculator sizes an AC unit or heater to your room and conditions.

How many BTUs do I need to cool a room?
Roughly 20 BTU per square foot. A 300 sq ft room needs about 6,000–8,000 BTU before adjustments.
What happens if my AC is too big?
It cools quickly then shuts off without removing enough humidity, leaving the room cold and clammy and cycling inefficiently.
Do I add BTUs for a sunny room?
Yes — add about 10% for rooms with heavy sun exposure, and subtract about 10% for heavily shaded rooms.

Add roughly 4,000 BTU to the base estimate because appliances generate significant heat.
