Formula & methodology
Formula: Steps = round(total rise ÷ 7.5 in); total run = steps × 10 in
A comfortable staircase uses a riser height near 7.5 inches. Dividing the total rise by 7.5 gives the step count; each tread adds about 10 inches of run.
- Measure the total rise — the floor-to-floor height in inches.
- Divide by about 7.5 in to get the number of steps.
- Multiply the step count by ~10 in for the total horizontal run.
- Check the result against your local building code's rise and run limits.
Worked example: A 45 in total rise needs about 6 steps and 60 in of run.
