Formula & methodology
Formula: Tiles = area × (1 + waste%) ÷ tile size, rounded up
Tile quantity is the area to cover divided by each tile's coverage, with a waste allowance for cuts and breakage, then rounded up to whole tiles.
- Enter the total area to tile in square feet.
- Enter the coverage of one tile in square feet.
- Enter a waste percentage (10% is standard, more for diagonal layouts).
- The calculator divides area by tile size, adds waste and rounds up.
Worked example: 120 sq ft with 1 sq ft tiles and 10% waste = 132 tiles.
