A room is an L-shape: one rectangle 12 ft × 10 ft and another 6 ft × 5 ft. What is the total square footage?

Result: 150 sq ft. 12 × 10 = 120 sq ft, plus 6 × 5 = 30 sq ft, total 150 square feet.

What this means: For flooring, add 5–10% waste for cuts and pattern matching — so order about 158–165 sq ft of material for this room.

How do I get the total square footage of several rooms?
Measure each room separately (length × width at floor level), then add the results — don't measure the building outline unless you want gross area including walls. A 12×14 bedroom, 10×12 office, and 15×20 living room total 168 + 120 + 300 = 588 sq ft. Real-estate 'finished area' excludes garages and unfinished basements, so match the convention before comparing numbers.
