You want 3 inches of mulch over a 200 sq ft garden bed. How much do you need?

Result: About 1.85 cubic yards, or 25 bags of 2 cu ft. 200 × (3/12) = 50 cubic feet; ÷ 27 = 1.85 cubic yards; ÷ 2 = 25 bags.

What this means: A dry 2-cubic-foot bag of wood mulch weighs roughly 20 lb (up to ~40 lb when wet), so this load is about 500 lb — worth ordering in bulk.

Formula: Cubic yards = area(ft²) × depth(in) ÷ 324

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Because depth is usually entered in inches, area × depth ÷ 324 converts directly to cubic yards.

How much compost do I need to topdress a lawn?
Topdressing uses a much thinner layer than mulching — ¼ to ½ inch, not 2–3 inches. At ¼ inch, one cubic yard covers about 1,300 sq ft; a 5,000 sq ft lawn needs roughly 4 cubic yards. Anything thicker than ½ inch risks smothering the grass instead of feeding it.
How deep should wood chips be, and do they differ from bagged mulch?
Spread arborist wood chips 2–4 inches deep around trees and shrubs — same volume math as mulch, so a cubic yard covers 108 sq ft at 3 inches. Chips are chunkier and often free from local tree crews, but keep them 3–6 inches clear of trunks and stems; piling chips against bark ('volcano mulching') invites rot regardless of material.
