How tonnage is calculated
The tool first converts the excavation to cubic yards with Cubic yards = (length × width × depth in inches ÷ 12) ÷ 27, then converts to weight with Tons = cubic yards × 1.4, the typical density of compacted fill and crushed aggregate.
Example: a 20 ft × 10 ft area at 6 inches deep is 20 × 10 × 0.5 ÷ 27 ≈ 3.7 cubic yards, about 5.2 tons.
Reading the result: gravel and fill are sold by the cubic yard in bulk and by weight in some markets — the calculator gives both so the order matches the supplier's unit. Densities vary by material (crushed stone ≈ 1.4 t/yd³, pea gravel ≈ 1.3), and adding 10–15% for compaction and settling is the practical rule before ordering.
