How wind chill is calculated

Wind chill is the "feels-like" temperature in cold, windy conditions. Wind strips away the thin layer of warm air next to your skin, accelerating heat loss, so it feels colder than the thermometer reads.

Example

At 20 °F with a 25 mph wind: WC = 35.74 + 0.6215 x 20 - 35.75 x 25^0.16 + 0.4275 x 20 x 25^0.16. With 25^0.16 ≈ 1.700, WC ≈ 35.74 + 12.43 - 60.78 + 14.54 = 1.9 °F.

This uses the 2001 NWS/Environment Canada formula, valid at or below 50 °F with winds above 3 mph. Wind chill affects exposed skin and living things — it cannot cool an object below the actual air temperature.

Does wind chill affect objects like car engines or pipes?
No. Wind chill only describes how cold it feels to exposed skin and other warm living things that are losing heat. Wind makes objects reach the actual air temperature faster, but it cannot cool them below it. A pipe will freeze based on the true air temperature, not the wind chill.
