Frequently asked questions

What does a travel budget calculator include?

It combines fixed trip costs, daily spending, trip length, and a contingency allowance into a planning estimate.

What are fixed travel costs?

Fixed costs can include flights, accommodation deposits, visas, tickets, or other expenses that do not scale directly with each day.

How should I estimate daily spending?

Use a realistic average for food, local transport, activities, and small purchases in the same currency.

Why add contingency?

A contingency helps cover price changes, unexpected transport, weather disruptions, or unplanned activities.

Does it convert currencies?

No. Use one currency for all inputs or convert amounts separately using a current rate.

Is the result a guaranteed travel cost?

No. It is a planning estimate and actual costs vary by destination, season, and travel style.

lightbulb Worked example

A 7-day trip: $850 flights, $700 accommodation, $60/day spending, 10% contingency.

Result: $2,167 total (about $310 per day).

Formula & methodology

Formula: Trip Budget = Fixed Costs + (Daily Spend × Trip Days) × (1 + Contingency %). Per-day rate = Total Budget ÷ Days for quick comparison.

How the trip budget is built

The tool sums fixed costs (flights, accommodation, visas, tickets) with daily spending × trip length, then applies a contingency percentage to the total: budget = (fixed + daily × days) × (1 + contingency%).

Example: $1,550 fixed + $60/day × 7 days = $1,970, and with a 10% contingency the target is $2,167 — about $310 per day.

Reading the result: the split between fixed and daily costs shows where your trip money actually goes — fixed costs dominate short trips, daily costs dominate long ones. The contingency protects against the price changes and unexpected expenses every trip brings; 10–15% is the standard planning buffer.
