How dew point is calculated

The dew point is the temperature to which air must cool for its water vapor to start condensing. It is computed from temperature and relative humidity with the Magnus-Tetens approximation.

Example

At 25 °C and 60% RH: alpha = ln(0.60) + 17.625 x 25 / (243.04 + 25) = -0.511 + 1.644 = 1.133. Td = 243.04 x 1.133 / (17.625 - 1.133) = 275.4 / 16.49 = 16.7 °C.

Unlike relative humidity, dew point is an absolute measure of moisture, so it is a better gauge of how muggy it actually feels. When dew point equals the air temperature, the air is saturated and dew, fog, or rain becomes likely.

What is the dew point?
The dew point is the temperature to which air must be cooled, at constant pressure, for it to become saturated and water vapor to start condensing into dew, fog, or droplets. A higher dew point means more moisture in the air. It is an absolute measure of humidity, unlike relative humidity, which depends on temperature.
How do you calculate dew point from humidity?
Use the Magnus formula. Compute alpha = ln(RH/100) + (17.625 x T)/(243.04 + T), then the dew point Td = 243.04 x alpha / (17.625 - alpha), with T and Td in Celsius. For 25 °C and 60% relative humidity, the dew point is about 16.7 °C.
What dew point feels humid?
Comfort drops as dew point rises. Below about 13 °C (55 °F) the air feels dry and pleasant; 16-18 °C (60-65 °F) starts to feel sticky; above 21 °C (70 °F) it feels oppressive and muggy. Meteorologists prefer dew point over relative humidity because it directly reflects how the air feels.
What is the difference between dew point and relative humidity?
Relative humidity is the percentage of moisture the air holds relative to its maximum at the current temperature, so it changes as temperature changes even when actual moisture is constant. Dew point is the actual moisture content expressed as a temperature, so it stays steady through the day and is a truer comfort indicator.
What happens when the dew point equals the air temperature?
When the air temperature drops to the dew point, relative humidity reaches 100% and the air is saturated. At that point moisture condenses out — forming dew on surfaces, fog in the air, or clouds aloft. This is why clear, calm nights that cool to the dew point produce morning dew.
