Formula & methodology

Formula: Gallons = cubic inches ÷ 231. Rectangular: L × W × H; Cylinder: π × r² × L; Oval: π × (W/2) × (H/2) × L

  1. Measure the tank's length, plus width and height (rectangular/oval) or diameter (cylinder), in inches.
  2. Multiply to get cubic inches: L × W × H for a box, π r² L for a cylinder.
  3. Divide by 231 — the cubic inches in one US gallon.

Worked example: a 24 × 12 × 10 in rectangular tank holds 2,880 in³ ÷ 231 = 12.5 gallons (47.2 L). A 30-inch cylinder with 12-inch diameter: π × 6² × 30 = 3,393 in³ = 14.7 gallons.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate fuel tank capacity?
Multiply the tank's interior dimensions in inches (L × W × H for rectangular tanks, π × r² × length for cylinders) and divide by 231 to get US gallons. A 24 × 12 × 10 inch tank holds 12.5 gallons.
How many gallons is my gas tank?
Most compact cars hold 10–13 gallons, mid-size cars 14–18, and full-size trucks 20–36. Measure your tank and enter the dimensions above for the exact figure, or check the owner's manual.
Why does my tank hold less fuel than the calculated size?
Manufacturers leave 5–10% of the volume as vapor space and unusable reserve below the fuel pickup, and internal baffles take up room — so usable capacity is a little under the geometric volume.
How do I convert cubic inches to gallons?
Divide by 231: one US gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches. For liters, multiply gallons by 3.785.
How do I work out how much fuel is left at a given level?
Enter a fill percentage — 50% of a 12.5-gallon tank is 6.2 gallons. Note that float-gauge readings are non-linear on cylindrical tanks lying on their side.
