Calculate the score needed on remaining assessments to reach a target course grade.

How this tool works

The calculator uses a weighted-grade equation: required remaining score equals the target minus the completed weighted contribution, divided by remaining assessment weight.

Enter representative inputs, review the result, and adjust assumptions to compare scenarios.

Frequently asked questions

What does a grade goal calculator show?

It estimates the score required on remaining weighted assessments to reach a target final grade.

Can it calculate an exam score needed?

Yes. Enter the current grade, target grade, and the percentage of the course still represented by the exam or remaining work.

What if the required score is above 100 percent?

The target is not reachable under the entered weighting without extra credit or a grading adjustment.

Does it account for dropped assignments?

No. Enter values after applying your course syllabus rules for dropped or replaced work.

Why is assessment weight important?

A larger remaining weight gives future work more influence over the final grade.

Is this calculation official?

No. It is a planning estimate; your instructor or learning platform may use additional rules.

Ask about extra credit early.

lightbulb Worked example

Current 88%, final worth 30%, target 90%.

Result: 94.7% needed on the final to reach 90% overall.

Formula & methodology

Formula: Required Final Score = (Target Grade − Current Weighted Grade) ÷ Final Exam Weight. Current Weighted Grade = Current Average × (1 − Final Weight).

How the required score is calculated

The tool applies required score = (target − current × weight completed) ÷ remaining weight, where the weights are the percentages of the course already graded and still ahead. It solves for the average you need on all remaining assessments to reach the target.

Example: at 88% with a final worth 30% and a 90% target, the required score is (0.90 − 0.88×0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 94.7%.

Reading the result: the remaining weight determines how much control you have — a 10% final leaves almost no leverage, a 40% final leaves plenty. The tool also flags impossible targets (required score above 100%) so you know when the goal needs extra credit or a different target.
