Formula & methodology

Formula: Age difference = |date of birth 1 − date of birth 2|, expressed in years, months and days

The age difference is the time between two birthdates, calculated exactly using the calendar rather than by rounding.

  1. Enter both dates of birth.
  2. Find the absolute difference between them.
  3. Express it as whole years, then the leftover months and days.

Worked example: Someone born 1990-01-01 and someone born 1993-07-01 are 3 years and 6 months apart.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the age difference between two people?
Subtract the earlier birthdate from the later one and express the gap in years, months and days. This tool does the calendar arithmetic exactly.
Does the order of the dates matter?
No. The age difference is the absolute gap, so it is the same regardless of which person you enter first.
How is the difference shown?
As whole years plus the remaining months and days, and also as a total number of days for precision.
Does it account for leap years?
Yes. The calculation uses the actual calendar, so leap days are included in the total.
Can I use it for siblings or any two dates?
Yes. It works for any two dates of birth — partners, siblings, friends, or historical figures.
