8 pomodoros~3 ⅓ h — solid knowledge-work day
12 pomodoros~5 h — near the sustainable ceiling

Formula & methodology

Formula: Cycle = 4 × (25 focus + 5 break) + 15 long break ≈ 2 h 15 m

  1. Start a 25-minute focus block and work on exactly one task.
  2. When it rings, take the 5-minute break — actually step away.
  3. After four pomodoros the timer schedules the 15-minute long break automatically and tracks your completed count.

Worked example: a full cycle (4 × 25/5 + 15) spans about 2 h 15 m and yields 100 minutes of tracked deep work — two cycles is a strong workday core.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Pomodoro Technique?
Francesco Cirillo’s method: 25 minutes of single-task focus, then a 5-minute break; every fourth round earns a 15-minute long break. The enforced rhythm fights procrastination and mental fatigue.
Why exactly 25 minutes?
Long enough for real progress, short enough that starting feels easy — the technique’s core trick is lowering the activation barrier. Cirillo named it after his tomato (pomodoro) kitchen timer.
What should I do during breaks?
Move away from the screen: stretch, water, window-gazing. Checking messages defeats the recovery — the break restores attention precisely because it’s a genuine context switch.
What if I get interrupted mid-pomodoro?
Orthodox rule: the pomodoro is void — note the interruption and restart. Pragmatic rule: pause for true emergencies, but track how often; frequent interruptions are the actual problem to fix.
How many pomodoros make a productive day?
Eight (~3.3 hours of deep work) is an excellent knowledge-work day; twelve approaches the sustainable ceiling. Quality beats count — track your average and improve it gently.
