Formula & methodology
Formula: Differential = (adjusted score − course rating) × 113 / slope rating
A score differential normalises a round for course difficulty. Your handicap index is built from the average of your best recent differentials.
- Take your adjusted gross score for the round.
- Subtract the course rating.
- Multiply by 113 (the standard slope).
- Divide by the course’s slope rating to get the differential.
Worked example: A score of 90 on a course rated 71.2 with slope 125 gives (90 − 71.2) × 113 / 125 = 17.0.
