Mid-semester scores: homework average 92% (weight 20%), quizzes 85% (weight 20%), midterm 78% (weight 25%), project 90% (weight 35%). Weighted grade = 0.20 × 92 + 0.20 × 85 + 0.25 × 78 + 0.35 × 90.

Result: 18.4 + 17.0 + 19.5 + 31.5 = 86.4%.

What this means: A solid B. The midterm dragged the average down despite strong homework — and with a final worth 30% still ahead, each point earned on it moves the overall grade by 0.3 points, so the final matters more than any single homework set.

Formula: Weighted grade = Σ(score × weight) / Σ weights

How your grade is calculated

The calculator applies the weighted-average formula: each score is multiplied by its category weight, the products are summed, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights.

  • Current grade: Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weights) across finished work.
  • Final needed: (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight.
  • Weights are normalized, so they don't need to total 100 — weights of 20/20/30 behave exactly like 28.6%/28.6%/42.9%.

If the required final score comes out above 100%, the target grade is mathematically out of reach from the current mark.

Frequently asked questions

Should I enter percentages or points?
Either, as long as you are consistent within a category. Percentages with weights adding to 100% is the most common setup. If your teacher uses points (e.g. 180 out of 200), enter earned and possible points and the tool converts each category to a percentage first.
What if my category weights don't add to 100%?
The calculator normalizes them: it divides by the sum of the weights you entered, not by 100. So weights of 20, 20, and 30 behave exactly like 28.6%, 28.6%, and 42.9%. Still, double-check your syllabus — a missing category is the usual cause.
Why is my grade lower than a straight average of my scores?
Because low scores in heavy categories dominate. A 78 on a 40%-weighted midterm drags harder than a 95 on 10% homework lifts. The weighted formula Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weights) captures this; a simple average ignores it entirely.

How do I average grades across assignments with different weights?
Multiply each score by its weight and sum: homework 92 at 30%, midterm 78 at 30%, final 85 at 40% gives 0.3×92 + 0.3×78 + 0.4×85 = 85.0. Straight averaging those scores gives 85 too only by coincidence — with weights of 20/40/40 the true grade drops to 83.6. Always check the syllabus weights before averaging.
Can it tell me if my target grade is still reachable?
Yes — enter your current scores, the final's weight, and your target. If the required final score comes out above 100%, the calculator flags the target as unreachable so you can aim at the next realistic grade instead of chasing an impossible one.
Is my data sent anywhere when I calculate?
No. Everything computes on the page itself, so your grades never leave your device — useful if you'd rather not paste schoolwork into random websites.
How precise is the final-exam calculation?
Mathematically exact for the inputs given: required = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. The uncertainty is all in your inputs — if some scores aren't final yet, treat the answer as a planning estimate.
