Interpretation guide
| Vehicle | Typical highway MPG |
|---|---|
| Hybrid sedan | 45–55 |
| Compact/sedan | 30–38 |
| SUV / crossover | 24–30 |
| Truck / loaded van | 17–22 |
Formula & methodology
Formula: Cost = (distance × 2 if round trip) ÷ MPG × price per gallon
- Enter one-way distance, your vehicle’s MPG, and the gas price.
- Choose round trip to double the distance.
- The calculator returns gallons used and total fuel cost.
Worked example: 250 miles each way, 28 MPG, $3.50/gal → 500 mi round trip, 17.9 gallons, $62.50. A roof box can cut MPG ~10–15% — re-run with the lower figure for honesty.
Frequently asked questions
How much will gas cost for my holiday trip?
Total miles ÷ MPG × price per gallon. A 500-mile round trip at 28 MPG and $3.50 runs $62.50. Add 10% margin for detours and idling in holiday traffic.
What MPG should I enter — city or highway?
Mostly-interstate trips: use highway MPG. Mixed routes: use the EPA combined figure. A loaded car with a roof box loses 10–25% — enter the degraded figure for long hauls.
Is driving cheaper than flying for the holidays?
For families, usually: 4 people × $150 flights = $600 vs ~$125 of fuel for a 500-mile round trip. Solo travellers on long routes often fly cheaper once hotels en route are counted.
How do I split fuel cost between passengers?
Divide the calculator’s total by occupants — the $62.50 example is ~$15.60 each for four. Apps make collection easy; agreeing the figure beforehand keeps the trip merry.
Does winter affect fuel economy?
Yes — cold starts, winter blends and headwinds cut MPG ~10–20% in freezing weather. EVs lose more (20–40% range). Use a winter-degraded MPG for December trips.
