Formula & methodology
Formula: Per person = (budget − extras) ÷ people
- Enter your total gift budget, the number of recipients, and non-gift extras (wrap, cards, postage).
- Extras are deducted first so they don’t silently eat the gift money.
- The remainder is divided equally per person.
Worked example: $500 budget, 8 people, $40 extras → $57.50 per person of true gift spend. Skipping the extras line would have overstated it as $62.50.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out gift cost per person?
Subtract non-gift costs (wrapping, cards, postage — typically ~10% of budget) from the total, then divide by recipients: ($500 − $40) ÷ 8 = $57.50 each.
Should everyone get the same amount?
Equal split keeps group gifting simple (Secret Santa, office pools). Family gifting usually tiers by closeness — use the Christmas Gift Budget calculator on this site for weighted splits.
What’s a normal per-person gift spend?
Survey medians: $10–25 for colleagues, $25–50 friends, $50–100 close family, $100+ partners. Whatever your number, anchoring it to a real total budget prevents January regret.
How much should I reserve for wrapping and cards?
About 8–12% of the gift budget covers paper, ribbon, cards and tape for a typical list. Postage for shipped gifts can add $5–20 per box — include it in extras.
Does this work for group gifts too?
Yes — flip it: enter the gift’s price as the budget and the number of contributors as people to get each person’s fair share of a joint present.
