Interpretation guide
| Withholding method | Typical rate |
|---|---|
| US flat supplemental (bonus run) | 22% federal (37% above $1M) |
| Aggregate (added to paycheck) | Your marginal rate — often higher upfront |
| Plus payroll taxes | 6.2% Social Security + 1.45% Medicare |
Formula & methodology
Formula: Net bonus = gross − (gross × rate%) − other deductions
- Enter the gross bonus your employer announced.
- Enter the withholding rate — the US flat supplemental rate is 22% federal; add state and payroll taxes for a fuller estimate.
- Add any other deductions (401k %, garnishments).
- The calculator returns tax withheld and the net amount you’ll receive.
Worked example: a $1,000 bonus at 22% withholds $220, leaving a net of $780 — before any state tax or retirement deferral.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Christmas bonus taxed so much?
Bonuses are "supplemental wages": US employers usually withhold a flat 22% federal, plus Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%) and state tax. The withholding looks high but reconciles at tax-filing time to your real rate.
Is bonus tax withholding the same as the tax I owe?
No — withholding is a prepayment. Your bonus is ultimately taxed at your ordinary marginal rate; if 22% over-withheld versus your bracket, the difference comes back in your refund.
How can I reduce tax on a bonus?
Divert part of it into your 401(k) or HSA before payout (election usually needed in advance), or ask whether the employer can pay in January if next year’s income will be lower.
What rate should I enter in this calculator?
For a quick US federal estimate use 22%. For a realistic net, add your state rate and 7.65% payroll, e.g. 22 + 5 + 7.65 ≈ 35% total withholding.
Are Christmas bonuses mandatory?
In the US and UK they are discretionary unless contractual. Some countries mandate a "13th salary" (e.g. Mexico’s aguinaldo by 20 December) — check local law if you work abroad.
